"Teachers need to make the time to understand who their students are - not who they wish they were, not who they are supposed to be, not who the department say they are, but who they are".
In 2017 I had the amazing opportunity to develop and run an ESL (English as a Second Language) Program within my classroom. Over the past few years, Kalianna have had many students who are Karen Refugees enroll.
These students have come directly from refugee camps in Thailand. These students have diverse and complex needs, requiring a specialised program. The program teaches the English Language explicitly as well as catering towards their needs in all subject areas, their social and emotional needs and adjusting the curriculum to suit their learning abilities.
Most Karen refugees come from small mountain villages.
