SCHOOLING/PASSION/INSPIRATION/WORK
I believe I was always destined to be a teacher. When I was very young I could never imagine doing anything else. I remember spending hours in my bedroom setting up my ‘classroom’ of stuffed teddies and dolls. I would hand out their workbooks and mark all their work, even giving out stickers to my exceptional students! Throughout my schooling I was always a diligent student and worked hard to gain the highest mark possible. This could also come down to my underlying perfectionism! In my last years of high school I become passionate about art and found a hunger for creating visual art folios. Heading into years eleven and twelve I decided that art was possibly the career choice for me. I chose to study four folio subjects. I worked very hard and produced folios that gained me an Atar score I was very pleased with. This meant that I had the fortunate opportunity to be able to choose to apply from a plethora of degrees. Although I loved studying art, teaching was always in the back of my mind. In a last minute change of direction I applied to study a Bachelor of Education at La Trobe in Bendigo. And as it was meant to be, I was off to study teaching the very next year. My years at university saw me develop a passion for special education and eventually I would complete a major in that field on top of my degree. Whilst studying I worked for various local respite organisations where I was supporting children and adults with many different physical and intellectual disabilities. I loved this work and learnt many skills that have been crucial in my work today. I packed a lot into my four years at university; I volunteered in Kenya, travelled to Ntaria School in the Northern Territory to complete a remote indigenous placement and took on many different volunteer roles in local schools. In recent years I have been working with a small school in Ganestan Province, Nepal. I first went to Nepal after the devastating 2015 earthquakes to assist in the rebuilt of a very isolated and poor school. This year I went over again to visit the school and maintain contact and support with the students and teachers.
Fast forward to now and I am in my third year teaching at Kalianna School in Bendigo. This year I decided to begin my masters degree in TESOL and form an ESL program for Karen Refugees at Kalianna. Working with children from diverse cultural backgrounds has always been a passion of mine. I was given the amazing opportunity to use both of my skills in special education and TESOL to create a program to cater for these students. I feel very fortunate to be teaching in such a supportive and devoted school where I am surrounded by exceptional teachers who are passionate about teaching all abilities.
